About Raouf Oderuth

Raouf Oderuth Born in 1953, I have been sketching and drawing from an early childhood followed by years of working with water colours and teaching Art students in Mauritius, my birthplace. I have been in UK since 1975 and I am now retired from Lecturing totally different subjects at a local University. My passion for Art has never left me. I love to use Oils on medium to large canvas only when I am inspired to do so, rather than as a chore. I am self taught and blessed with a keen eye for details, composition, light and shade, shapes and perspectives. My further education is enhanced by visiting Art Galleries worldwide and studying limitless techniques. For a long time now, my portfolio focuses on the accuracy and natural representation of my travels, experience with people, their cultures and lifestyle, varied landscapes and seascapes, still life and portraits. Consequently, I feel comfortable with my style and very much favour a realistic approach in capturing and painting my subjects. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens,Velasquez, Kelf and Constable rank highly amongst my favourite painters. I draw from inspirations in a non discriminatory manner. My paintings reflect the lifestyles in Europe, Africa, Mauritius, India and China. The fascination for Architecture around Europe never ends and I love the sounds and smells of the Far East and Tropical islands. Coupled with these elements, research into the past and present historical fabric are woven and integrated into my subjects. In addition, I have a keen interest in the artistic perspectives of migration around the globe. My own great grandparents were from India who had endured a perilous journey aboard a sailing ship to the island of Mauritius where they eventually settled as indentured workers post abolition of slavery under British rule. With regards to Culture & Arts, I regularly contribute with images and rationale of my work to newspapers and other social media websites. I also support academic , poetic work and charitable organisations through Art. Life itself is too short to represent its many facets through paintings. Nevertheless, I hope to leave sufficient impressions as a legacy for friends and families around the world who appreciate Art to enjoy.
